Established in 1989 by Bimla Arora, the group began with Shemrock preschools and expanded into primary and secondary education in 2009 under the Shemford brand.  Shemford Futuristic School, Jorhat, has its origins in the visionary efforts of educationist and entrepreneur Diganta Dutta, who began reshaping the educational landscape of Upper Assam in the early 1990s, with support from Mr. Surojit Chaliha. Dutta's first initiative, Computer Point, was instrumental in pioneering structured computer education in the region, a groundbreaking move when digital literacy was still emerging. His leadership helped introduce Windows-based computing to students in Jorhat and its surrounding areas, establishing him as a key figure in digital education.

 

Recognising the need for accessible higher education, Dutta established COMIT in 2003, a Distance Learning Centre affiliated with Sikkim Manipal University in Jorhat. This centre offered various degree programs, including BBA, MBA, BCA, MSc IT, BSc Bioinformatics, BA, and MA in Journalism and Mass Communication, thereby empowering thousands of students and professionals in the region. Notably, the centre has earned accolades as the Best Learning Centre in East India (Small City Category) on two occasions.

 

With a commitment to holistic, value-based, and student-centred education, Dutta shifted his focus to school-level education. In 2014, he founded educational trust  HRD Foundation.
